Fly through 2b2t's history

There is a free public Minecraft server that lets you fly anywhere in the archived 2b2t map and jump between snapshots taken at different points in time. Here is how to join it and use it.

Short answer. Add wayback.2b2t.place in Minecraft Java 1.21.4. It is free, public and read-only. Once in, /flashback moves you between snapshots of the map taken at different dates, and /tp takes you to any coordinates. You fly in spectator mode. There is nothing to download.

What it is

The team who archived a million-block square of 2b2t put their capture on a Minecraft server and opened it to anyone. In their words:

“If you can’t download this entire data dump for yourself, you can visit our 2b2t Wayback Minecraft server. You can use the /flashback command to browse through historical snapshots of the map and fly around in spectator mode or /tp to visit any coordinates. Our public service is available for free.”

It is the difference between downloading 15 TB and typing an address. For almost everyone, this is the way to see the archive.

How to join

  1. Open Minecraft Java Edition on 1.21.4. The server runs Paper with the archive behind it, so all the clever work happens server-side and a plain unmodified client connects. There is nothing to install and no whitelist.
  2. Multiplayer, Add Server, address wayback.2b2t.place.
  3. Join. You fly in spectator mode, able to pass through blocks.

Verified online on 10 September 2026.

What to do once you are in

  • /tp takes you to coordinates. This is how you visit anywhere you have read about: spawn, a famous base, the end of a highway.
  • /flashback, or /fb, is the point of the whole thing. Typing it opens a clickable list in chat: pick a year, then a month, then a day, then a time. The world around you becomes that snapshot. Spawn was recorded repeatedly, roughly 700 times for the Nether spawn over three weeks, so the busiest parts of the map have the deepest history.
  • /now and /old jump to the newest and oldest snapshots. /back and /forward step through them. /dimension switches between Overworld, Nether and End.
  • You are in spectator mode throughout, and cannot leave it. You cannot build, break, or be killed. Nothing you do affects anything.

One quirk worth knowing: which dates are available depends on where you are standing, because different areas were recorded at different times. Stand somewhere the bots never flew and you are told there is no recorded data at your position.

What you will and will not find

You are looking at a recording, not the live server. The main Overworld capture ends in April 2026, so nothing built after that exists here.

The archive holds blocks, biomes and block entities. It does not hold entities, so the world is empty of mobs, and item frames and armour stands will not appear.

Coverage is a square around spawn rather than the whole world. It is a very large square, over a million blocks across, but 2b2t’s border sits 30 million blocks out in every direction, so the vast majority of the server is not in here. The scale, in numbers.

The history currently runs from roughly November 2024 to April 2026, matching the captures. The team have said they intend to extend it further back, but it does not reach 2011 today and you should not expect to see the early server here.

If you would rather look in a browser

There is a 2D map at 2b2t.place built on the same data. It needs no Minecraft client at all. The wayback server is the richer experience because of the time travel, but the website is faster if you just want to look at the terrain.
